Summary
Primary Panathlon runs on a rotational system whereby a team (6-8 participants) get to take part in a carousel of seven activities officiated by trained sports leaders. Each activity will be demonstrated and explained. A central timer allows for a consistent period of activity at a station whereby teams ‘have as many goes as they can’ before their best performance is recorded before moving to the next activity station. Team performances are then ranked at each station and the aggregate of points awarded determines a team’s final score.

Ramps, aids and modified versions of the activities may be introduced to help inclusivity

Each participant receives a medal and certificate of participation. Team winners and runners -up at each competition receive a trophy and framed certificate.

Core activities - overview

Flight Path

· One competitor throws at a time

· Competitors throw coloured velcro balls at a circular target

from varying distances

· 4 throws each (from green, red, blue and yellow lines)

· 1 point every time the ball hits or sticks in the correct colour ring i.e matched colours

· Team points are added together to get a team score

Boccia Blast – 8 balls to be thrown

· All students must be sat on chairs arranged in a line.

· Students take it in turns to throw a boccia ball, from a seated position, at a ball/target

area/skittle to score – the ball being knocked out of a hoop for 1 point, a boccia ball remaining/resting in a smaller hoop for 2 points (of which there are two) and the skittle being knocked over for 3 points (of which there are two)

· Targets are arranged in the shape of an inverted triangle i.e hoop at the front,

skittles at the back, smaller hoops in the middle

· The referee must indicate with the paddle when (s)he is ready for the ball to be delivered by the competitor

· The team’s best ‘round’ of eight thrown balls is recorded as their team score

New Age Kurling

· 1 competitor delivers three stones at a graduated numbered target

· Student’s ‘slide’ kurling stones onto the scoring target scoring from 0-5 points each delivery*

· Students slide from a marked area which is approximately 2m away from the front of the target mat. This can be varied, depending upon floor surface.

*Bonus points can be scored by promoting a different coloured stone (which is placed off the scoring area) onto the target

· The average team score (total score divided by number of attempts) score is calculated to give the team score

Precision Beanbag

· 1 player is sat on a chair at the edge of the mat

· Scoring in 6 areas (12,8,2,6,1,4) If the beanbag is tossed out or it slides out of the scoring areas ‘0’ is recorded

· Six beanbags to throw – (maximum score = 56)

· Each beanbag must rest in a different target area (ie if two beanbags are thrown in the same box, only one counts)

· The box from where the beanbag first lands is recorded not from where it finishes (except for a beanbag finishing outside the scoring areas)

· The average score is calculated – total score divided by the number of individual turns)

Ten Pin Topple

· Teams aim to knock down as many pins as possible

· The ten skittles are placed in a line formation parallel to the delivery line (with the height of one skittle’s width apart)

· One player plays at a time, with the remainder of the team in a safe area behind the delivery line. The player propels the ball underarm at the skittles.

· If a skittle(s) is hit (s)he collects it and places it in the collection area before returning to the back of the queue. The ball is returned for the next player once the skittle is in the collection area.

· If a skittle is not knocked down following a delivery the ball is returned to the next player via the sports leader

· Once all ten skittles have been knocked down the formation is replaced. A cone is placed in the collection area to signify each score of ten.

· The team score is recorded as the total number of skittles knocked down.

Tennis Slalom

Each competitor negotiates a slalom circuit with a tennis racket and a giant tennis ball

There are penalties for moving a boundary cone, controlling the ball with feet and missing sections of the slalom.

There is a bonus awarded for stopping the ball in the box at the end of the slalom

The competitor’s time is calculated by the recorded time plus any additional time for penalties minus any bonus – the ‘adjusted’ time

The two best ‘adjusted’ times added together constitute the team score

Harlem Hoops

· Each player will have 3 shots except the player who successfully scores all three attempts in which case a bonus shot will be awarded from the free throw box

· The floor basket remains in the same spot throughout the game (adjusted when necessary)

· If a basket is scored move back to the next line (line 2) – if the shot is missed remain at line 1.

· If the shot from line 2 is made move back to line 3. If the shot is missed stay at line 2

· If scored from line 3 the player has a bonus attempt which may be taken from the free throw box.
